LESSONS WITH THE MASTER The first of these releases is a new book by Paul Walker called “Lessons with the Master”. This book has just been published in June 2007 and is a detailed diary of Sensei Walker’s experiences training at Master Kanazawa’s Headquarters Dojo in Tokyo, Japan. Sensei Walker lived and trained in Japan under Master Kanazawa and his many incredibly talented instructors and while there took a detailed diary of every single lesson that he attended—279 in all. These diary notes have been released in book form along with several other chapters detailing the build-up to going to Japan, the actual experience of living and training in Japan under one of the world’s most famous karate masters, as well as some training tips for students and teaching tips for instructors. In addition Sensei Walker puts forth a teaching methodology and structure that allows flexibility of content based on individual instructor’s preferences and style of teaching but also ensures a focus on the core curriculum of Shotokan karate. SHOTOKAN KARATE—THE COMPLETE CURRICULUM The second of these new releases is a comprehensive DVD set on the complete system and curriculum of Shotokan karate, all the way from beginner to 5th degree black belt. This DVD series has been structured so that the Shotokan student is given everything that he/she needs at each progressive rank level. The base Shotokan curriculum that is used for the series is Master Kanazawa’s SKIF system but everything is broken down according to each set of basic techniques needed, each individual kata in three different formats (slowly, regular speed, and with commentary and key points), and each separate kumite drill or set at the appropriate level. In addition there are grading demonstrations all the way from beginner to black belt, and additional insights into karate philosophy as well as key ideas and concepts. The whole set covers all of the punches, kicks, blocks, strikes and stances at each level, all 26 official Shotokan kata with additional advanced kata, all of the kumite drills (including Gohon kumite, Sanbon kumite, Kihon ippon-kumite, Jiyu ippon-kumite and Jiyu kumite), as well as some additional board breaking, multiple attacker and kata application demonstrations. This production aims to live up to its name as being a presentation of the complete Shotokan karate curriculum and the first three DVDs of this series have just been released as of December 2007.
