At 4th or 5th degree black belt you should now know all 26 official Shotokan kata at greater and lesser levels.  Naturally you will have your favorites and those are the kata that you should practice most often but it is also important to continue to practice all kata, especially the basic and intermediate kata as these are the kata that you will teach most often as an instructor.

There are of course additional kata to be learned from other styles of Karate at this point and the course of study will depend only on the individual’s personal preference.  Also don’t forget that there are many kata involving weapons that you may not even have seen before let alone practiced so remember to keep an open mind at this level of study.  Keep training hard and keep learning!
